Master’s Thesis or Internship
Topological materials at the nanoscaleRef. 2026_004We are seeking an enthusiastic Master thesis student or intern to join our topological materials team at IBM Research - Zurich. As we enter the post-Moore era, conventional CPU chips are approaching their fundamental limits: continued transistor scaling drives higher power consumption while diminishing performance gains. Addressing this challenge requires new materials and device concepts that go beyond traditional approaches. Topological conductors, such as Weyl and Dirac semimetals, offer a promising solution. Their topologically protected surface states enable low-dissipation transport properties, providing a novel pathway to energy-efficient nanoscale electronic devices. In this project, the successful candidate will explore and develop these topological materials to understand their exotic transport behavior at length scales relevant for future electronics. The project involves thin-film growth and characterization using magnetron sputtering, with a focus on relating the unique transport physics of these materials to their behavior in scaled devices. The work is part of a major European collaboration with partners including TU Vienna, IMEC, Max Planck Institutes, and INL, providing exciting opportunities for international research exchange. The successful candidate will join a highly interdisciplinary team at IBM Research Zurich, combining expertise in nanoscience, condensed matter physics, and nanotechnology, and will benefit from state-of-the-art infrastructure in a collaborative and creative research environment. Recent papers of the group include:
